Alaina Holland – DIRECTOR

In 1963 Edward Albee was robbed. ‘Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?’ was the drama jury’s choice to receive the Pulitzer Prize that year. The Pulitzer advisory board deemed Albee’s play did not adhere to Pulitzer standards. The prize was not awarded that year. A controversial beginning to a play that is still being staged across the globe sixty-one years later. The themes that he gravitated towards are still relevant today; and none more so than the main theme in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? The big bad wolf in Albee’s work is the fear of living without the illusions that we carefully construct and then live, play and hide within. In this modern age of filters and photoshop, augmentation and altered images; living within an illusion is commonplace. In Woolf, we are invited into the living room of George & Martha to witness not just a drunken evening of bickering and bad behaviour, but a knock down, dragged out battle for survival. The survival of who and what, is open to the viewers interpretation. Albee holds up a mirror to the societal pressures of an impossibly perfect 1950’s American family. And then he smashes it to pieces. In the words of Albee himself “That’s what happens in plays, yes? The shit hits the fan.”
